St. Vitus Church (Kostelsv. Vita) or 聖ヴィート教会(kostelsv。vita)
The Church of St. Vitus (Kostelsv. Vita) in Český Krumlov, 105 miles (170 km) from Prague, is not to be confused with the cathedral of the same name at Prague Castle. With its unusually steep roof and single tower, this church is a popular stop for visitors visiting Krumlov Castle. The church is located within the castle complex.
History and Architecture of St. Vitus Church (Kostelsv. Vita)
The church is the third church of the same name to be built on this site. The first church was a circular Romanesque building, founded around 925 by Duke Wenceslas and replaced in 1060 by a three-nave basilica with twin towers. The importance of this church increased rapidly, especially after the founding of the Prague diocese (973) and the creation of the cathedral council, St. Vitus Cathedral, which later became a significant cultural and administrative body.
In 1344, the construction of a Gothic cathedral began by order of Charles IV. Matías de Arras, the first architect responsible for the construction, and Petr Parles, the second, completed the choir surrounded by chapels, the Chapel of Saint Wenceslas, the Golden Gate, and the lower part of the Great South Tower. I did. Petr Parles started the Great South Tower but never finished. The initially planned height was only achieved by adding a 16th-century Renaissance gallery and a helmet-shaped roof, which the current dome in the 18th century replaced.
The Hussite Wars interrupted the cathedral’s construction in 1419 and could not be completed for centuries. However, some monarchs attempted to restart construction, and choir stalls were added during this period. However, the façade of the cathedral remained temporarily closed.
It was not until the 2nd half of the 19th century that cathedral construction finally began. Construction work was started by the St. Vitus Cathedral Completion Association, which continued renovating the old parts and completing the cathedral in the neo-Gothic style. Finally consecrated in the year 1929. However, the church’s interior has been repaired several times since then.
Visitors enter the cathedral through the west entrance before the passage between the second and third courtyards. The bronze doors are decorated with reliefs depicting the church’s history and the legends of Saint Wenceslas and Saint Wojciech.
The neo-Gothic part of the cathedral consists of the nave, the narrow aisles lined with chapels, the stained glass windows of the chapels, and the north wing of the outer church. The entrance to the third courtyard is called the Golden Gate and is used for ceremonies and other occasions.
In the cathedral choir, in front of the main altar, there is a royal mausoleum; below, in the cathedral’s crypt, there is a royal tomb. Gothic chapels surround the chancel, some burial places of Czech monarchs and patron saints.
